Knightsbrook’s inter-club teams of the past have been involved in some brilliant matches over our short and storied history of The Newsam Cup, but never one quite like the titanic battle that unfolded between our anchor pairing of Rodney Trenwith & Pat O’Rourke on the twentieth green against Greenore’s final pairing this evening in Knightsbrook.
“It was amazing,” reflected a breathless former ‘Captain of Knightsbrook’ Thomas Renehan afterwards. “Obviously both Stephen Murray and I were delighted to finish off our match early on the 14th green. But credit to Rodney and Pat in front. They were two holes down with three holes to play and to pull off a win on the twentieth green like that was something very special. I love these moments.
“Leonard Flynn team Manager was equally astounded by the result and was asked whether he’d ever seen a match like one witnessed on the last.
“Probably not,” said Leonard. “At least that I’ve been involved in. This was a hard fought battle this evening and with Brian o Neill and Colin Fitzmaurice securing a famous point away in Greenore, there was an awful lot of pressure on Rodney’s and Pat’s shoulders.
“It was a good day, we got over the line. I thought that we had a good team and the taste of team victory is always nice.
“Club Captain Seamus Lanney’ was also very proud of the team performance; we will celebrate tonight with a nice meal and few drinks in the hotel. The club can now look forward to another Newsam Cup final. Hopefully this year we can get it over the line and add to last years Inter-County Club Champions Pennant.
