Planting works and the placing of an old stile (Mass Pass) is taking place at the 18 Tee Box which is jointly sponsored by Jonathan Cusack and Gerald Reilly.
The Stile or Mass Pass as its known was rescued from the corner of the the Reilly farm where the old Dublin Road passed through heading to Trim from Scurlockstown Mill. Well over 150 years ago people going to mass or markets walked into Trim from areas such as Scurlockstown and beyond , and rather than walk on dirty roads frequented by horses and traps, donkeys and carts they walked along mass paths and when you came to a ditch or wall, or a bad part of road they used what is called a Mass Pass. This was just a series of steps and a hand rail to secure a safe crossing.
Ronan our head greenkeeper has started works there and the stile is in place surrounded by beautiful new plants. It is hoped to put some stones in front and behind of stile to re-create an impression of the old road. It is intended to place a plaque in front of stile so that people, waiting to tee off, will read and appreciate the little piece of history and what a Mass Pass looked like. It is intended to paint it black on the steps and Red on the wheel which hopefully will not take away from its original look. If members have any suggestions or opinions on how best to present it please let Gerald Reilly, Ronan or Jonathan know. My thanks to Jonathan, Ronan and his staff for working on this project with Gerald Reilly.
