North Leinster Mixed Win

Our North Leinster Mixed team had a tremendous 3 matches to 2 win over the title holders Ashbourne GC on Sunday, July 1st. We played 3 matches away and two matches at home. Each match was very tight. First out in Ashbourne GC was Donal & Anne. They were 3 down after 10 holes but got it back to all square and were only beaten on the 18th hole. Joe & Mary lost on the 15th hole. In the third match our pairing of Peter & Marie were 2 holes up going down the 17th hole and despite them losing a ball off the tee, they still managed to win the hole to clinch an all-important 3 and 1 victory for Knightsbrook GC.

I was delighted to step in as acting manager while Vice-Captain, Damian McDonnell was away on holidays. We found out very quickly that we were up against a very strong Ashbourne GC team. Men’s Captain, John Tobin & Jodie Coughlan were 4 down after 5 holes but soon started to fight back and went down the 18th hole all square. Jodie hit a fantastic chip out of the green-side bunker just 10 foot below the cup and captain JT holed the putt to win the match and break Ashbourne hearts. JP and Jane were 3 holes down early on but on the back nine they won the 14th, 15th & 16th holes to go 1 up on the 17th tee-box and closed out the match on the penultimate green with a 2 up win.

Team Managers Anne & Damian were delighted for the team especially after our defeat to Ashbourne GC in the semi-final last year. Special thanks to deputy managers Joe McGrane & Cormac Geraghty on the day who looked after the team so well. We are back in the semi-final again against Dundalk GC.
